Tiny Arcade Pole Position Review: Is This Mini Arcade Worth It?

The Tiny Arcade series has carved out a niche for retro enthusiasts who want the arcade experience without the footprint of a full-size cabinet. The Pole Position edition, with its iconic racing theme, promises to deliver that nostalgia in a compact form. But does it live up to the hype? In this review, we'll examine the build quality, gameplay, and overall value of the Tiny Arcade Pole Position to help you decide if it's worth adding to your collection.

We've spent time with this mini arcade, putting it through its paces with the included controls and display. We'll also compare it to other options in the mini arcade market, considering factors like portability, authenticity, and price. Whether you're a seasoned collector or new to the world of retro gaming, this review will give you the insights you need to make an informed purchase.

Build Quality and Design

The Tiny Arcade Pole Position features a compact cabinet that mimics the classic upright design of the original arcade. The exterior is made of durable plastic with a vibrant decal that captures the spirit of the 1980s racing game. The joystick and buttons are surprisingly responsive for their size, offering a satisfying tactile feel that enhances the gameplay experience.

One of the standout features is the backlit marquee, which adds a touch of authenticity to the mini cabinet. The screen, though small, is bright and clear, displaying the game's graphics with surprising fidelity. The cabinet also includes a small coin slot for decorative purposes, which is a nice nod to the original arcade experience.

• Compact size fits easily on a shelf or desk
• Responsive joystick and buttons
• Backlit marquee adds authenticity

Gameplay and Performance

The Tiny Arcade Pole Position plays the original Pole Position game, and it does so faithfully. The controls are mapped well, and the game's difficulty curve is preserved. The sound effects and music are also included, adding to the immersive experience. However, the small screen size means that the action can be a bit hard to see for some players, especially if you're used to larger displays.

The cabinet runs on batteries, which is convenient for portability, but you'll need to keep a supply of AAA batteries on hand. There's also a USB port for power, which is a welcome addition for those who prefer a wired setup. The game is not rechargeable, so you'll need to consider the ongoing cost of batteries if you plan to play frequently.

• Faithful recreation of the original game
• Battery or USB power options
• Small screen may be a drawback for some

Value and Collectibility

For collectors, the Tiny Arcade Pole Position is a charming addition to any retro gaming collection. It's a conversation piece that doesn't take up much space, and it's reasonably priced compared to larger arcade replicas. However, if you're looking for a more authentic experience, you might consider investing in a full-size arcade cabinet or a high-quality emulation setup.

When comparing to other mini arcades, the Pole Position edition stands out for its iconic branding and nostalgic appeal. But it's not the only option on the market. If you're also into classic games like Frogger, the Tiny Arcade - Frogger offers a similar experience with different gameplay. Ultimately, the decision comes down to your personal preferences and how much you value the nostalgia factor.

• Reasonable price point for a novelty item
• Great gift for retro gaming fans
• Consider other Tiny Arcade titles if racing isn't your favorite

The Tiny Arcade Pole Position is a delightful mini arcade that delivers on its promise of portable nostalgia. While it may not be for everyone, its build quality, faithful gameplay, and collectible appeal make it a worthwhile addition to any retro gaming enthusiast's shelf. If you're a fan of the original game or just love the aesthetic of classic arcades, this tiny cabinet is definitely worth considering.
